Gas Spring Maintenance and Care Guide

Most gas springs are sealed units and should not be opened, drilled, welded, heated, or modified after production. The internal nitrogen pressure can be dangerous if the cylinder or rod is damaged. Maintenance is therefore focused on correct installation, clean operation, regular inspection, and timely replacement rather than repair.

Protect the piston rod from scratches, paint, adhesive, dust, and impact. The rod passes through the seal system, so surface damage can shorten service life. If the rod is bent or the tube is dented, the gas spring should be replaced rather than forced back into use.

Follow the recommended mounting direction for the application. A common approach is rod down orientation in the resting position so internal oil helps lubricate the seal. Avoid transverse force and misalignment. The end fittings should pivot freely through the full range of motion without binding.

Keep the surrounding area clean enough that abrasive particles do not collect on the rod. For OEM equipment, create a service instruction that records extended length, compressed length, stroke, force, end fitting style, and replacement part reference. This makes future maintenance easier for distributors and end users.
