Gas spring mounting is a geometry problem before it is a force problem. The mounting points define the lever arm, the used stroke, the open angle, the closing force, and the bracket load. A gas spring with the correct force rating can still perform poorly if the brackets are too close to the hinge or if the rod reaches full compression before the lid is closed.
Check the centre to centre distance between the two pivots at the fully closed and fully open positions. The difference must fit within the available stroke, with a small reserve at each end so tolerance and hinge wear do not force the internal stops.
Many applications are mounted with the rod lower than the tube in the closed or resting position. This helps keep internal oil near the seal and supports service life. Always confirm that the selected gas spring and application allow the chosen orientation.
Avoid side load. The end fittings must pivot freely during the full movement, and the rod should not be forced into an angled path. Binding fittings, twisted brackets, or misaligned pairs can damage seals and create uneven motion.
Bracket strength must be reviewed for the maximum transmitted load, not just the lid weight. A high force gas spring can multiply load into the mounting points. Use suitable fasteners, reinforcement plates, and bracket material where the panel is thin.
Before production, cycle the lid or panel slowly from closed to open. Confirm that the tube, rod, fitting, bracket, handle, seal, stored item, and surrounding frame do not collide. Also check pinch points and whether the lid needs a separate mechanical support for service.
Support the lid independently before removing or installing a gas spring. Do not drill, weld, heat, bend, clamp, or paint the piston rod. Fit both ends without forcing the rod sideways. For paired installations, use matched parts and symmetrical mounting positions.
After installation, test opening effort, hold open angle, closing force, speed near the end of travel, and latch engagement. If the motion is too strong, do not immediately increase bracket resistance; review mounting points and force selection first.
