Handle gas springs safely by avoiding drilling, heating, welding, side load, damaged rods, weak brackets, pinch points, and unsupported panels.
Gas springs contain compressed nitrogen. They should not be drilled, opened, welded, heated, bent, crushed, or modified after production. A damaged pressure tube or piston rod can create a serious safety risk. If a gas spring is bent, leaking, dented, heavily corroded, or has damaged end fittings, replace it instead of trying to repair it on the equipment.
During installation or replacement, support the lid, hatch, guard, or moving panel with an independent prop or lifting device. Never rely on a worn gas spring to hold a panel while a technician removes fasteners.
Check bracket strength, fastener engagement, pivot alignment, and clearance before cycling the application. The gas spring should move without side load, and the end fittings should rotate freely. If two gas springs are used, mount them symmetrically and check that one side is not carrying most of the load.
Look for pinch points near the hinge, bracket, rod, and end fittings. Confirm that the lid cannot overextend, bottom out the gas spring, hit the operator, or block emergency access.
Keep the piston rod clean and undamaged. Do not clamp the rod with pliers, paint over it, scratch it, or expose it to abrasive debris. In corrosive environments, use suitable material and surface treatment from the beginning rather than expecting maintenance to solve corrosion later.
For safety related guards or heavy lids, define an inspection interval. Check for force loss, leakage, loose brackets, worn fittings, corrosion, and changed opening behavior.
Cycle the actual assembly through the full range of travel. Test opening effort, closing effort, hold open position, release control if applicable, and bracket movement. Include representative temperature and vibration conditions when the application demands it.
