A lockable gas spring is used when a moving part must hold at selected positions, not only at full open. Typical applications include medical beds, treatment chairs, ergonomic tables, seating, lift tables, industrial adjustment panels, and furniture mechanisms. The release control opens an internal valve so the rod can move; when the control is released, the gas spring locks again.

Before choosing a lockable unit, define whether the application needs rigid holding, elastic feel, controlled adjustment, or simple lift assistance. A standard lift gas spring is usually not enough when the user expects intermediate position holding.

Lockable gas springs can be designed for different locking characteristics. Some applications allow slight elastic movement; others need firmer holding. The required behavior depends on the safety role, user load, direction of force, and comfort expectation.

Release methods may include lever release, push button release, cable release, or remote control systems. The control must be reachable, protected from accidental operation, and routed without sharp bends or interference. For OEM furniture or medical equipment, release feel should be checked with real users or representative samples.

For medical or seating applications, also describe the safety function and whether the gas spring supports body weight, equipment weight, or positioning only.

Mounting geometry is still critical. A lockable gas spring can hold position only within the limits of bracket strength, fitting alignment, and internal locking capacity. Avoid side load and make sure the release system is not strained during motion.

Lockable gas springs often need sample validation because hand feel, release travel, and holding stability are difficult to judge from drawings alone. Check locking at the positions users actually need, not only at the endpoints.
